Interviewing Tobias Frere-Jones


Over 25 years, Tobias Frere-Jones has established himself as one of the world’s leading typeface designers. He has created some of the most widely used typefaces, including Interstate, Poynter Oldstyle, Whitney, Gotham, Surveyor, Tungsten and Retina.

This publication combines a conversation with Tobias Frere-Jones and a curated selection of his works, offering a comprehensive exploration of his journey as a type designer. Through the interview, it reveals insights into his inspirations and design methodologies, showcasing how his precise and innovative experimentation with typography has shaped a dynamic experiences.

As students studying design at RISD, we believe passion is the innate drive for all designers. Good design should inform, educate, and elevate its surroundings. Our instinct and duty are to conceptualize how things can be better continuously. Tobias Frere-Jones has been a role model to be followed by type designers, and many others. We are grateful for his genuine answers and generous advice and are truly lucky to be guided by and learn from someone like him.
